From Trent Reznor:

Nine Inch Nails is pleased to announce the expansion of the Ghosts project into the visual world. The band has teamed up with YouTube to host a “film festival” around Ghosts. The concept is for you to take whatever tracks you feel inspired by and create what you feel should accompany them visually. You will be able to see all of the submissions, and a team (including Trent) will be sorting through them and setting aside ones they feel are exceptional. Eventually (within a couple of months?) we hope to present a virtual “film festival” with Trent and some special guests presenting selections of your work.

“This isn’t a contest and you don’t win elaborate prizes – it’s meant to be an experiment in collaboration and a chance for us to interact beyond the typical one-way artist-to-fan relationship. We’ve discussed some interesting ways this could go, including multiple installments of the online “film festivals,” to broadcast TV specials, to a one-time live performance of the entire Ghosts record with your visuals involved. It really depends on how this progresses and develops.

We are all very much looking forward to what you come up with, and hope you enjoy the experience. Visit http://www.youtube.com/ninofficial for information on how to participate”.

Trent Reznor made this announcement on the Nine Inch Nails website yesterday. Could be interesting. Frankly, I still don’t see it helping the small, independent musician to get noticed.

A guy named Mike Masse performed and recorded his own version of Boston’s “A Man I’ll Never Be” as a tribute to the late, great Brad Delp. Those who are fans of Project Studio Network have likely already heard it, but in case it slipped past you, here’s a link to the song as well as a thread discussing it on GearSlutz.com.

I recommend the following strategy:

Download the MP3

Turn off the lights

Put on a pair of headphones

Turn it up

Close eyes

Enjoy

I’ve talked to Mike, and he’s a real class act. Give the song a listen or two (or 3, or 100, or 1,000) and let him know what you think of it. Grab the MP3 while you can… I don’t know how long he’s going to leave it up there.

According to RUMINT, music mogul Jay Z and the squeezalicious Beyonce may be preparing to join up with Apple, Inc. to start a new online record label of some sort. Jay Z is currently the CEO of Def Jam Records and Beyonce is, reportedly, nearing the end of her contract.

According to MediaTakeOut.com:

Jay Z will announce he’s leaving his position at Def Jam to create a new “super label” with Beyonce.

In an exclusive interview, MediaTakeOut.com spoke to a key person involved in creating the new label. And according to that insider, the new label will launch early next year. Tells our insider, “It’s a done deal. [Jay Z] already has Beyonce and [Mathew Knowles] on board … She’ll be finishing up her contract [with Sony], and I expect that she’ll sign on to the new label shortly afterwards.”

Regarding Apple’s alleged involvement, MTO had this to say:

It’s not clear yet which major label will house the new super label. But according to our insider, it’s not going to be Island Def Jam. The tipster explains, “Jay Z brought the idea to Def Jam first, but they thought he was asking for too much money.” The insider continues, “Now they’re shopping the deal around to the other majors and to Apple [the creator of iTunes] – who is very interested in doing business.”

Could this signal the beginning of the slow transition from the old guard to the new? Could this indicate a transition of power from the few who control the money, means, and machinery to the many who just want to make a living from their music while keeping their artistic integrity as unskanked as possible?

I’m not ready to put any money on it just yet. At this point, it just looks like yet another step in the further pimpification of the internet. Only time will tell.
